Why we built this

Most social apps are made for people who are already out and safe. Luney is made by queer people for the rest of us too: the person still in the closet, or the one whose phone was just taken.

From our App Store description

We started Luney because the apps we were using weren’t made with us in mind.

On those apps, being queer was a profile option or a search filter. Group chats, events and communities were missing, or added late and never finished. Where there were safety tools at all, they were built around other people’s risks.

When something went wrong, whether it was harassment, a creep in our messages, a bug or an outage, we got a canned reply from a no-reply address, or no reply at all.

So we built the app we wanted.

  • You meet people in groups, group chats and at events. There’s no swiping through people.
  • The safety tools start from what can go wrong for queer people. If someone walks up or looks over your shoulder, Panic Mode lets you hide Luney in a moment until you bring it back, and if you don’t come back within five minutes, the people who’ve accepted a place in your Trusted Circle get an alert that you may need help. Before you meet someone new, set a Date Check-in: if you haven’t tapped I’m safe by the deadline, they get an alert too. Screenshots and screen recordings of Luney come out black.
  • A person decides every report, and you hear back when it’s closed.
  • When you write to us, a person reads it. The contact page has the addresses.

What we decided at the start

We settled these first, and they won’t change:

  • Groups, group chats, messages, events and posts are free.
  • We don’t sell your data.
  • There are no ad networks in the app, and nothing in it tracks you across other apps.
  • The home feed shows posts newest first. Nothing reorders it to keep you scrolling.
  • When Luney warns you, suspends you or removes something you posted, a person on our team made that call. A group’s admins can also set automod rules that remove posts and messages in that group automatically.

The full list of promises is on What we won’t do.

Where we are now

Luney is small and new. It’s on iPhone and Android, and members talk with us on the Discord. The roadmap shows what people have asked for from Settings, Feedback and what we’re building now.

If you want a say in what comes next, write to us from the contact page or come and say hello on the Discord.

Thanks for being here.

Made by queer people, for queer people.
