About Luney
What is Luney?
Luney is an 18+ social app for LGBTQIA+ people, made by queer people. It's for making friends and finding community, not for dating, and there's no swiping through people. You meet people in groups, group chats, events and live audio rooms.
What can I do on Luney?
Join groups and talk in their group chats. Add friends and message them with photos, GIFs and voice notes. Find events and say whether you're going. Drop into live audio rooms and raise your hand to speak. Share posts, photos and reels, and keep photos in albums on your profile.
Who is behind Luney?
Luney is made by a small queer team. A person on the team reads every email sent to [email protected], so write to us any time.
How is Luney different from other LGBTQIA+ apps?
Panic Mode, Trusted Circle and Date Check-in have been in the app since its first release, and every safety tool is free. Your home feed shows posts newest first, there are no ads, and a person decides every report.
Is Luney an LGBTQ+ dating app?
No. There are no swipe cards and no way to browse strangers by how they look. If you're looking for dates, a dating app will suit you better.
Is Luney for making LGBTQ+ friends?
Yes, that's what it's for. Join groups about things you care about, talk in their group chats, go to the same events, and add the people you get on with as friends.
Who can use Luney?
Anyone who is LGBTQIA+ and 18 or older, and allies too. That includes lesbian, gay, bi, pan, trans, non-binary, intersex, ace, queer and questioning people. You'll need an iPhone or an Android device.
Is Luney 18+?
Yes. You have to be 18 or older to use Luney. The app asks for your date of birth when you sign up, and you can't finish signing up if you're under 18.
Getting Luney
Is Luney out yet?
Yes. You can download Luney now from the App Store and Google Play. The changelog lists every release and what changed in each one.

Will Luney always be free?
The basics will always be free: groups, group chats, messages, events and posts. VIP is an optional subscription that adds extras, such as an animated avatar, bigger uploads and a styled display name. The VIP guide lists everything it includes.
What platforms is Luney on?
Luney runs on iPhone with iOS 16 or later, and on Android 7.0 or later. You can't use it in a web browser. Some links people share open on the web anyway: a reel link shows a preview, and you need the app to watch it; an album link opens in full when its owner has shared it with anyone who has the link.

Safety and privacy
Is Luney safe?
No app can keep you completely safe, but Luney has tools for risks queer people face. If someone walks up or looks over your shoulder, Panic Mode lets you hide Luney in a moment. It stays hidden until you bring it back. If someone has accepted a place in your Trusted Circle, they get an alert that you may need help if you don't come back within five minutes. You switch Panic Mode on in Settings › Safety › Panic Mode. Before you meet someone new, set a Date Check-in: if you haven't tapped I'm safe by the deadline, your Trusted Circle gets an alert too. Screenshots and screen recordings of Luney come out black, and you can block people. A person reads every report, and staff can stop someone who breaks the rules from doing one thing, like messaging. The Safety page explains each tool, including what a blocked person can still do.
Where is my data stored?
Your account, posts and messages are kept in Luney's database, which Supabase hosts. Photos, videos and voice notes are stored with Bunny. Mux processes and streams reels, and Google's Firebase sends notifications and collects crash reports. Settings › About Luney › Credits lists the services Luney runs on and what each one does. Luney is run from Canada and follows PIPEDA, Canada's privacy law. If you live somewhere with a stricter law, like the GDPR in the EU and UK, we follow that one instead.
Is there a way to hide my activity?
Yes, in Settings › Privacy. Stealth Mode makes you look offline, hides when you're typing, turns read receipts off both ways, and leaves you out of the Home cards that show who's around. Or pick only what you want: set Online Status to Invisible, turn off Show Last Seen, or turn off Read Receipts (then you won't see other people's either). You also choose who can see each post and each gallery photo when you share it.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Settings › Privacy › Delete Account. If you own a group, hand it to another member or delete it first; the deletion can't start while you still own one. After you confirm, you have 30 days to change your mind: sign back in and the app asks whether you want to cancel the deletion. When the 30 days are up, your profile, posts, comments, reels and photos are deleted for good. Messages you sent in DMs and group chats stay in those chats, shown as from Deleted Account. Some records stay. Your sign-in history, with IP addresses, is kept for 180 days after each sign-in. If your account was part of a report or a moderation action, those records are kept too; 90 days after the deletion or the last report or action, whichever is later, the names, copies and notes are removed, and the basic record that's left still has your account ID on it.
How does Luney protect users?
A person decides every report. If Luney staff warn you, suspend you or remove something you posted, it shows up in Settings › Account Activity, and you can appeal most decisions from there. You can block people and report posts, comments, messages and profiles. App Lock puts a PIN on the app (Settings › Security › App Lock), and you choose who sees each post. Screenshots and screen recordings of Luney come out black. We publish our moderation numbers in the Open book.
Groups, events and chat
What LGBTQIA+ communities are on Luney?
Members start the groups, so what you'll find depends on who's using Luney. A group can be about an identity, a city, a hobby, a fandom, a support topic or anything else. Each one can have posts, a group chat, events and its own rules. Browse the public groups in the app, or start your own.
Can I create or join LGBTQ+ groups?
Yes. Join any public group, accept an invite to a private one, or start your own with a name, an emoji and, if you like, a description. The people who run a group can add rules, roles and a welcome message, and can ask new members to wait for approval before they join.
Does Luney have LGBTQ+ events?
Yes. You can set up an event that's open to everyone, and a group can hold events just for its members. People answer Going, Maybe or Can't, and the event keeps a list of who's coming. Luney never asks for your phone's location, so the only place an event shows is the one its host typed in.
Does Luney have group chats?
Yes. Each group can have a chat, with replies, reactions, photos, GIFs, voice notes, pinned messages and the group's own custom emojis. There are 1:1 DMs as well, and you choose who can message you in Settings › Privacy › Who Can DM.
Does Luney have live audio?
Yes. Live Lobbies are audio rooms you can drop into and listen. Start one for a group you're in, or make it public so anyone can come in. To talk, raise your hand, and the host can bring you on stage.
