What Luney does

What you can do in the app today, safety tools first. Search by name, or show only what came in 1.6.0.

139 features · 4 new in 1.6.0 · checked against the app on 5 October 2026

Safety

If you’re in danger right now, call your local emergency number. Luney isn’t a crisis service and can’t send anyone to help.

  • Panic Mode

If someone walks up or looks over your shoulder, Panic Mode lets you hide Luney in a moment. It stays hidden until you bring it back. If you’re not back within five minutes, your Trusted Circle is told you may need help.

In the app: Settings, Safety, Panic Mode

    More about Panic Mode

It only works once you’ve switched it on, so set it up before you need it. Add at least one friend to your Trusted Circle as well, so the alert has someone to go to.

  • Find help near you

Crisis lines, clinics, housing, legal help, community spaces and youth services for LGBTQIA+ people in your country, with crisis lines first. It’s the same directory as luneyapp.com/resources.

In the app: Settings, Safety, Find help near you

More about Find help near you

Call or open a website in one tap. After you’ve opened it once, a copy is saved on your phone, so it keeps working without signal. Where a place lists its hours, it shows whether it’s open now, in its own time zone. Save places to a private list, share one, or tell us when something has closed or moved. The map view works offline for every place you’ve opened.

  • Trusted Circle

Up to five friends who’ve agreed to look out for you. They get an alert if you miss a Date Check-in, or if you use Panic Mode and don’t come back within five minutes.

In the app: Settings, Safety, Trusted Circle

    More about Trusted Circle

Only friends can be in it, and each one has to accept your invite first. Either of you can leave at any time. You set it up once, and Panic Mode and Date Check-in both use it.

  • Date Check-in

Before you meet someone new, set a deadline between 15 minutes and 12 hours away. If you haven’t tapped “I’m safe” by then, your Trusted Circle gets an alert with who you’re meeting and where, if you filled those in.

In the app: Settings, Safety, Date Check-in

    More about Date Check-in

Tapping the alert opens your profile, so they can reach you. Nobody sees your check-in while it’s running, and you can push the deadline back if plans run long. You get a reminder when it’s almost up. A private note stays with you and is never sent. You need at least one person in your Trusted Circle to start one.

  • Crisis support

Queer-affirming crisis lines you can call, text or chat with in one tap.

In the app: Settings, Safety, Crisis Support Resources

    More about Crisis support

When our team reviews a report and the person who wrote the post or message seems to be struggling, they can send that person these lines. The notification only says Luney is thinking of them and offers support. It doesn’t mention a report.

  • Block

Block someone from their profile, or from the menu on their posts, reels and confessions.

In the app: Settings, Safety, Blocked Users

    More about Block

Blocking works both ways: neither of you can see the other’s profile, posts or reels, message each other, or comment on each other’s posts. In a group you’re both in, you can still see each other’s posts and messages there, and you can end up in the same live lobby.

  • Reporting

Report a profile, post, comment, reel, message or live room.

    More about Reporting

You get a notification when your report has been dealt with.

  • Limit new accounts

Stop accounts less than a week old from commenting on your posts and photos or sending you a DM. Friends can always reach you.

In the app: Settings, Privacy, Limit new accounts

    More about Limit new accounts

    It doesn’t cover groups.

  • Hidden words

Pick words or phrases you don’t want in comments on your posts and gallery photos. When a comment uses one, other members don’t see it. You and the person who wrote it still do.

In the app: Settings, Privacy, Hidden words

    More about Hidden words

They aren’t told, and a comment that’s hidden when it’s posted sends no notifications. You see it dimmed and can let it through. You can hide up to 100 words and phrases. It doesn’t cover posts you make inside a group. Luney staff can still read hidden comments, for example when they look into a report.

  • Screenshot warnings

If someone on an iPhone screenshots your photo post, your profile or one of your reels, you get a notification, and they’re told you were notified.

    More about Screenshot warnings

In a DM or group chat, a screenshot adds a note to the chat that everyone in it sees. The screenshot itself comes out black. A group’s owner can turn those chat notes off inside that group, and every group shows whether they’re on, on its Details page and on the preview before you join.

  • Explicit photos are blurred

A photo or GIF that looks explicit goes up blurred, with a “Possibly sensitive” label, and anyone who wants to see it taps it.

More about Explicit photos are blurred

The check runs on your phone. In posts, chats and galleries it only blurs, and never blocks or deletes anything. It’s set to leave beach photos, gym selfies, lingerie and drag looks alone. You can also blur anything yourself by marking it as a spoiler.

  • Explicit profile pictures

A profile photo, banner or group photo can’t be blurred, so if the check on your phone reads one as explicit, it isn’t accepted.

    More about Explicit profile pictures

The picture doesn’t leave your phone for that check. If the check got it wrong, tap Ask for a review. Someone on our team looks at it, puts it in place if it’s fine, and you get a notification with the answer. The same goes for the photo and banner you use inside a group.

  • Reports in groups

A report about something in a group goes first to the people who run that group. If nobody acts within 48 hours, it goes to Luney staff, and serious reports go to staff straight away.

  • Restrictions on one feature

Instead of suspending a whole account, our team can stop someone doing one thing, like posting, commenting or messaging, for a set time or for good.

More about Restrictions on one feature

If it happens to you, it’s in Settings › Account Activity, on the Restrictions tab, with the reason and when it ends. You can appeal it from there.

  • Mistaken removals can be undone

If our team removes something by mistake, it can be put back for up to 30 days afterwards.

  • Spam limits

Every account has limits on how fast it can post, comment, message, send friend requests and make groups, which slows spam down.

    More about Spam limits

If you reach one, the app tells you when you can try again.

  • Removed accounts stay removed

If an account is removed for a serious violation, its email address can’t be used to sign up again.

  • Terms and Privacy Policy

You accept the Terms of Service and the Privacy Policy when you sign up. When we publish a new version of either, the app asks you to accept it before you carry on.

More about Terms and Privacy Policy

You can read both any time in Settings › About Luney.

  • App Lock

Put Luney behind its own PIN, separate from your phone’s lock. It asks for the PIN when you open the app, and when you come back to it after the time you choose.

In the app: Settings, Security, App Lock

    More about App Lock

Choose straight away, after 1, 5 or 15 minutes, or after an hour. The PIN works on all your devices, even offline, and Luney is covered in the app switcher. After several wrong tries you have to wait before trying again. If you forget it, sign out and back in to reset it.

Privacy

  • Stealth Mode

Look offline to everyone, and hide when you’re typing or have read someone’s messages.

In the app: Settings, Privacy, Stealth Mode

    More about Stealth Mode

Read receipts are off both ways while it’s on, and your custom status is hidden. You’re also left out of the Home cards that show who’s around (Roll Call, Shoutouts, Icebreakers, Weekly Prompt answers and Match Nudge) and out of other people’s mutual-friend lists. In the current app, only you see the Stealth label on your profile.

  • Read receipts

When someone reads your DM, you see “Seen” under it, and they see the same when you read theirs.

In the app: Settings, Privacy, Read Receipts

    More about Read receipts

It works both ways: turn it off and people can’t see when you’ve read their messages, and you can’t see when they’ve read yours. Stealth Mode turns them off the same way.

  • Closet Mode

Only your inner circle sees your posts, reels, photos and albums, whoever you shared them with.

In the app: Settings, Privacy, Closet Mode

    More about Closet Mode

People outside it, friends included, also stop seeing your guestbook notes and the friends you have in common, and your album links and reel previews on the web stop opening. Your name, photo and bio still show, with a Private label. Comments you leave on other people’s posts, groups and DMs aren’t covered.

  • Post audiences

Choose who can see each post as you write it: Friends, Friends of friends, Inner circle or Only me.

    More about Post audiences

Whether people can share your posts outside Luney is one switch for all of them: Allow Sharing My Posts, in Settings › Privacy.

  • Download my data

Download a copy of your Luney data as a file, once every 30 days.

In the app: Settings, Privacy, Download My Data

  • 30 days to change your mind

When you delete your account, it’s removed after 30 days. Sign back in before then and you can keep it.

In the app: Settings, Privacy, Delete Account

More about 30 days to change your mind

If you own a group, hand it to another member or delete it first. A group can’t be left without an owner.

  • Screenshot and recording protection

Screenshots and screen recordings of Luney come out black on iPhone and Android, and so does its preview in the app switcher.

More about Screenshot and recording protection

On iPhone, if someone starts recording while a DM is open, the other person is told. Group chats work the same way unless the group’s owner has turned those warnings off. It can’t stop someone taking a photo of the screen with another phone.

  • Account reviews

If Luney staff have reviewed your account, you can see when, and how many times they opened your DM threads, group messages and attachments.

    More about Account reviews

A review shows up 7 days after it closes, and one that’s still open isn’t shown. It doesn’t say who looked or why, but you can tap Ask about this review to open a support ticket about it. Reviews are in Settings › Account Activity, on the Reviews tab.

  • Account activity

Every moderation action on your account in one list: warnings, suspensions and when they ended, removed and restored content, and messages from our team offering support.

In the app: Settings, Account Activity

    More about Account activity

It shows the last year, or just the last 30 or 90 days. Each action is signed by the Luney moderation team, never by one person’s name.

Connection

  • Disappearing messages

    New in 1.6.0

Either of you can set new messages in a DM to delete themselves after 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days. Tap the timer at the top of the chat.

    More about Disappearing messages

The time counts from when each message is sent, and when it’s up the message is gone for both of you, photos included. Messages sent before you turned it on stay, and turning it off doesn’t bring anything back. A message that was reported stays with the report so our team can look at it.

  • View-once photos

    New in 1.6.0

Send a photo in a DM that the other person can open once. Press and hold it before you send it and tap View once.

    More about View-once photos

After it’s opened, nobody can open it again, you included. If it isn’t opened within 14 days, it expires. It can’t be forwarded, and notifications and your list of chats only say “View-once photo”. We delete it from our servers a day after it’s opened, unless it’s been reported.

  • Voice notes

Send voice notes of up to two minutes in DMs and group chats. When the sender’s phone can, it writes a transcript itself, so the recording isn’t sent anywhere to be turned into text.

    More about Voice notes

Tap Show transcript under the note to read it. Screen readers read it out. Some notes have none: the sender’s phone needs its own speech recognition and their permission, and phones on Android 12 or older can’t make one. Drag to any point, play at 1x, 1.5x or 2x, and the next note from the same person plays straight after. Chat search finds notes by what was said.

  • Chat folders

Sort your DMs into folders you name, then filter the Chats list by folder.

    More about Chat folders

You can make up to 10, and a chat can be in more than one. Nobody else sees your folders, and they’re still there when you sign in on another phone.

  • Guestbook

Friends can leave a short note on your profile. It only shows once you’ve approved it.

    More about Guestbook

Notes can be up to 280 characters. To stop new ones, turn off Friends can sign your guestbook in Settings › Privacy.

  • Friends and inner circle

Add friends with a friend request, and put the people you’re closest to in your inner circle, which you can pick as a post’s audience.

More about Friends and inner circle

Choose who can send you requests in Settings › Privacy › Who can add you: everyone, friends of friends, or no one. People you’ve blocked can never ask.

  • Direct messages

One-to-one chats with text, photos, GIFs, voice notes and reactions.

    More about Direct messages

Choose who can start a chat with you in Settings › Privacy › Who Can DM: everyone, friends of friends, friends only, only people you already talk to, or nobody.

  • Previews of shared posts

Share a Luney post or reel into a chat, post or comment, or paste its link, and it shows as a preview card.

More about Previews of shared posts

Tap a shared post to like it, comment or reply without leaving the chat. Tap a shared reel to watch it full screen.

  • Share a post as an image

Send one of your own posts somewhere else as a picture: a card with the text, your name and handle, the date and the Luney moon, through your phone’s share sheet.

  • Public and private groups

Every group has its own posts, chat, events and member list, and a Details tab with what the group is about and its rules.

More about Public and private groups

Whoever runs a group can rename it, write up to 20 rules, and switch off posts, chat, lobbies or events if the group doesn’t need them. The owner can delete the group, and has 7 days to ask Support to bring it back before it and everything in it are gone for good.

  • Slash commands in group chat

Type / at the start of a message in group chat to see the commands. Anyone can use /rules and /help. The group’s owner, and anyone whose role lets them kick or manage members, can also /kick, /ban and /mute people.

More about Slash commands in group chat

They can also /unban and /unmute. A mute lasts up to 30 days, or an hour if you don’t give a time, and the muted person can still read the chat and sees why and until when. Every kick, ban and mute asks for a reason.

  • @mentions

Type @ and someone’s handle in a post, comment, reel caption, DM or group chat to mention them. They get a notification, and the @handle opens their profile.

  • @everyone / @admins in group chat

In group chat, the owner and anyone with the Manage group permission can type @everyone to notify every member, or @admins to notify just the people who run or moderate the group.

More about @everyone / @admins in group chat

People who’ve muted group mentions still won’t hear about it. Other members can’t use either tag.

  • Hashtags

Add #tags to posts and reels, tap a tag to see the posts and reels that use it, and find trending tags on the search screen.

    More about Hashtags

A tag’s page only shows posts you’re allowed to see, newest first. Trending tags come from the last week of posts and reels.

  • Members grouped by role

A group’s member list shows the owner first, then each role from highest to lowest, then everyone else. Each name takes the colour of its top role.

  • How the owner appears

A group’s owner can show in the member list as Owner, as their top role, or as both. They keep every owner power whichever they pick.

More about How the owner appears

Owners can give themselves custom roles too.

  • Custom roles and permissions

A group’s owner, and anyone they give Manage roles, can make roles with a name, a colour and a set of permissions, then give them to members.

More about Custom roles and permissions

You can rename the Member role everyone has. Each permission on a role can be Allow, Off or Deny, and when someone has several roles, the highest one that says Allow or Deny decides. To change one permission for one person, long-press them in the member list and choose Manage permissions. Nobody can take permissions away from the owner.

  • Accept the rules to join

A group’s owner can ask people to accept the group’s rules before they join.

More about Accept the rules to join

Tapping Join shows the rules with an “I accept, join” button. Joining through an invite link counts as accepting.

  • Group automod

Set rules that catch a word, a phrase or a pattern in a group’s chat, posts and comments.

    More about Group automod

A rule can stop the message being sent (the writer sees “This group filters that”), let it through and add it to a review list for whoever runs the group, or remove it and mute the writer for 5 minutes up to 30 days. The people who run the group are never filtered. Set it up in Group Settings › Automod.

  • Help with invites and emoji

Let a member make invite links or look after the group’s emoji without making them an admin.

More about Help with invites and emoji

Give them Invite members or Manage emojis, through a role or just for them, and they see only that part of Group Settings. With Invite members, they only see the invites they made and who joined through them.

  • Live Lobbies

Live audio rooms, for a group or for anyone. Pick a vibe, raise your hand to speak, and send emoji reactions that float up for everyone.

    More about Live Lobbies

When someone in your group goes live, the group’s members get a notification that takes them straight into the room. Hosts can play background music from an MP3 or a link, and an uploaded file is deleted when the room closes. The sound keeps going if you switch apps or lock your phone, but closing the room’s screen leaves the room. Tap a speaker to see their profile or report them.

  • Remind me to reply

Long-press a chat you can’t answer yet and choose Remind me to reply. It moves up under your pinned chats with a marker, and can nudge you in an hour, in 8 hours or tomorrow.

More about Remind me to reply

It doesn’t mark anything as read, and the reminder clears when you reply.

  • Group chat notifications

For each group, choose All messages, Only mentions or Nothing for its chat notifications.

    More about Group chat notifications

Long-press the group on the Groups tab or in Your groups and tap Notification settings, or tap your own photo inside the group. Your choice covers push notifications, the inbox and the pop-ups inside the app.

  • Here now

See how many members have a group open right now: on the group’s header, on its card in the Groups tab, and added up on Home for the groups you haven’t muted.

    More about Here now

It’s a number, never names, and you’re never counted. Whoever runs the group can switch it off in Group Settings.

  • Events

Plan something and see who’s coming. Add a date and time, and a place if you like, and people answer Going, Maybe or Can’t.

    More about Events

Public events are on the Events screen. A group’s events are on its Events tab, and only members see them. The host gets one notification the first time each person says Going or Maybe.

Express yourself

  • Progress albums

    New in 1.6.0

An album only you can ever see, with a date on each photo and a way to compare two side by side.

    More about Progress albums

It can’t be shared, linked or put on a post, and nobody can be tagged in its photos or comment on them. Make one from New album in the Albums tab on your profile. Each photo shows the day you added it, and you can change it. Compare puts two photos next to each other, the older one on the left, with how far apart they were taken.

  • Scheduled posts

Pick a time in the composer, from 5 minutes to 60 days ahead, and the post goes out then, even if your phone is off.

    More about Scheduled posts

The composer lists what’s waiting, and you can post any of it now or cancel it. Up to 25 posts can wait at once. A post with a poll can’t be scheduled yet.

  • Posts and comments

Post text and photos, and talk in threaded comments with reactions. You decide who can comment.

    More about Posts and comments

Set who can comment on your new posts in Settings › Privacy › Who Can Comment: anyone who can see the post, friends only, friends of friends, or no one. You can also turn comments off on any single post.

  • Feature posts on your profile

Pin one or two of your posts, from your feed or your groups, to a Featured section at the top of your profile.

More about Feature posts on your profile

They stay in your post list too, with a pin badge.

  • Messages wait for a connection

Send a message with no signal and it waits in the chat with a small clock, then sends itself when you’re back online, even if you’ve left the chat. If you close Luney, it goes out the next time you open it.

More about Messages wait for a connection

Photos still need a connection when you send them. A message that has waited more than 12 hours asks before it sends.

  • GIFs

Send GIFs from the picker, with the ones you sent recently at the top. Tap the heart on a GIF to save it to your Favourites.

    More about GIFs

You can also long-press a GIF someone sent you in chat to save it. Free accounts can keep 10 favourites, and VIP has no limit.

  • Group custom emoji

A group can upload its own emoji for its members to use there.

  • Longer bio

Write a bio over several lines. When it’s long, people tap View more to read the rest.

  • Pinned comments

Pin one comment to the top of your post. Pin a different one and it takes its place.

  • Jump to a day

Pick a date in a chat and go straight to the first message from that day.

  • Undo send

Turn it on and each message waits five seconds, with an Undo button, before it’s sent.

In the app: Settings, Preferences, Undo send

  • Send with Enter

Turn it on and Enter sends your message. On a hardware keyboard, Shift+Enter still starts a new line.

In the app: Settings, Preferences, Send with Enter

  • Comment sort

Sort a post’s comments by Oldest, Newest or Top.

  • Mute someone’s posts

Stop seeing one person’s posts and reels without blocking them. They aren’t told.

    More about Mute someone’s posts

To undo it, go to Settings › Safety › Hidden content.

  • Muted words

Posts and comments with a word or phrase you’ve muted stay covered until you tap them. Nothing is deleted.

In the app: Settings, Preferences, Muted words

    More about Muted words

You can mute up to 100. Only whole words match, and capital letters don’t matter.

  • Accessibility settings

Text size, bold text, more contrast, less motion and Soft Mode, all in one place.

    In the app: Settings, Accessibility

    More about Accessibility settings

Bold text, Increase contrast and Reduce motion switch on by themselves when the same setting is on in your phone. Text size works on top of your phone’s own size. Soft Mode is also in Settings › Theme.

  • Text size

Make Luney’s text bigger or smaller than your phone’s setting, on every device you’re signed in on.

In the app: Settings, Accessibility, Text size

    More about Text size

Choose Small, Default, Large or Extra large.

  • Data saver

In the app: Settings, Preferences, Data saver

  • Forward messages

Long-press a message in a DM or group chat to send it on to another chat or group, photo and all.

  • Sign-in alerts

If someone signs in to your account while you’re signed in somewhere else, you get a notification asking if it was you. If it wasn’t, one tap signs out every other device.

    More about Sign-in alerts

Then change your password so they can’t get back in. Every signed-in device is listed in Settings › Security › Active Sessions.

  • Reactions on posts

React to a post with any emoji, next to the like button. The emoji you use most come first.

    More about Reactions on posts

The author is told about the first reaction from each person.

  • Invite friends

Invite friends from Settings. When enough of them join and take part, you get a thank-you code, and the Invite friends screen shows how close you are.

In the app: Settings, Invite friends

    More about Invite friends

Your friend adds your handle under Who invited you during their first week. They count once they’ve been on Luney for two weeks and joined in.

  • Redeem a code

Enter a code from a Luney event, holiday or giveaway, or open its luneyapp.com/redeem link.

In the app: Settings, Redeem a code

    More about Redeem a code

A code can give extra Glow, more gallery space, upload perks, a profile badge or VIP days. Each code works once per account.

  • Photo tags

Tag friends in post and gallery photos. Their names show on the photo, they’re told, and the photo shows on their profile.

    More about Photo tags

Choose who can tag you in Settings › Privacy › Who Can Tag You: friends’ tags wait for your approval (the default), show straight away, or nobody can tag you. Waiting tags are under Tag Requests, and nobody is told if you decline.

  • Polls on posts

Add a poll to a feed or group post, with 2 to 4 options, running for a day, 3 days, a week or with no end.

    More about Polls on posts

Everyone gets one vote and can change it or take it back at any time. Results show as bars with percentages.

  • Several photos in one post

Put up to six photos in a post, or twelve with VIP, and people swipe through them.

More about Several photos in one post

Each photo can have a description, and you can drag them into order before you post. A post has photos or one reel, not both.

  • Pronouns, labels and interests

Add your pronouns, identity labels, interests and a banner to your profile.

More about Pronouns, labels and interests

Tap one of the app’s identity labels to read what it means in plain words. Tap an interest to open its hashtag, which also lists groups tagged with it. With VIP, your avatar and banner can be animated GIFs.

  • Tell people about a new name or pronouns

    New in 1.6.0

When you change your name or pronouns, you can let your friends or your inner circle know. The notice shows your new name, never your old one.

More about Tell people about a new name or pronouns

Nobody is told unless you choose. You can send one notice a day. Photo tags and Rewind slides switch to your new name too.

  • Private notes on profiles

Leave yourself a short note on someone’s profile, like “met at the meetup”. Only you can see it.

  • Posts on profile

Your profile lists the posts you’ve shared, newest first. Visitors see the feed posts you shared with them, and group posts only from groups they’re in too.

    More about Posts on profile

A group post has a border in the group’s colours and a label with the group’s name.

  • Likes and saves on group posts

Like and save group posts the same way as feed posts, with the heart and the bookmark on the post.

More about Likes and saves on group posts

Only the group’s members can see or like its posts, and the author is told about a like. Saved group posts are on the Groups tab in Saved.

  • Saved

Tap the bookmark on a post, reel or group post to save it to a private list. Only you can see it, and nobody is told.

    In the app: Settings, Saved

    More about Saved

A saved post works just as it does in the feed, and a saved reel opens in the reel viewer. A group post you can no longer see drops off the list.

  • Reel editor

Add text, emoji stickers and music to a reel, then trim, split, fade and reorder clips on a timeline.

    More about Reel editor

Add up to 5 pieces of text and 5 stickers. Text comes in five fonts and any colour, with an outline or a background, and can fade, slide up or pop in. Drag stickers into place, pinch to resize and twist to rotate. Give each clip its own filter, effect and speed, and join clips with a cut, a crossfade or a dip to black. • Crop a group’s photo freely

When you set a group’s photo, drag the crop frame anywhere, pull a corner to make it any shape, or rotate the photo.

  • Photos tab on profile

Your profile’s Photos tab shows each of your photos once, from your gallery and your posts, newest first.

More about Photos tab on profile

Profiles have All, Posts, Photos, Albums and Reels tabs. Tap a photo to see it full size. Photos from DMs and group chats never show there.

Notifications

  • Notifications and inbox

Push notifications and an in-app inbox for likes, comments, replies, mentions, messages, friend requests and what happened to your reports.

  • Choose what notifies you

Turn each kind of notification on or off, separately for push and for the inbox.

    In the app: Settings, Notifications

  • Custom status

Put an emoji and a short line under your name, for friends or everyone, and choose when it clears.

    More about Custom status

It shows on your profile, at the top of DMs, in the Chats list and in group member lists. It can clear after 30 minutes, an hour, 4 hours, today or this week, or stay until you change it, and your recent ones are a tap away. Nobody sees it while you’re set to Invisible or in Stealth Mode.

  • Take a break

Pause notifications for an hour, 3 hours, 8 hours, a day, 3 days or a week. Your inbox still fills up, and safety alerts still come through.

In the app: Settings, Notifications, Take a break

    More about Take a break

Unless you turn it off, you show as offline until the break ends. You can leave an away note for people who open a chat with you. If anything came in, one notification tells you how many once the break runs out. You can also end it early from your inbox.

  • Daily time reminder

Choose how much time a day is enough, from 30 minutes to 3 hours, and Luney tells you once when you pass it, with a shortcut to take a break.

In the app: Settings, Notifications, Daily time reminder

    More about Daily time reminder

The time is counted on your phone and never sent to us.

  • Quiet hours

Pick hours when Luney holds its notifications, overnight for example. When they end, you get one summary instead. Safety alerts always come through.

In the app: Settings, Notifications, Quiet hours

    More about Quiet hours

Everything still lands in your inbox, and you can set different hours for each day. To let one chat through anyway, long-press it in your DM list and pick Always notify in quiet hours.

  • Mentions cut through muted chats

Turn this on and an @mention still reaches you in a DM or group chat you’ve muted.

In the app: Settings, Notifications, Mentions cut through muted chats

More about Mentions cut through muted chats

It’s off to start with, so a mute stays a mute. Quiet hours still apply.

  • Settings for one group

Set notifications differently for one group, so you can go quiet there without going quiet everywhere.

  • Mute all, or reset

Turn off the main kinds in one go (likes, comments, replies, mentions, messages, friend requests, group activity and event replies), or put every kind back to how it started. The rest keep their own switches.

More about Mute all, or reset

Notices from our moderation team can’t be muted.

Make it yours

  • Themes

Four colour themes: Prism, Midnight, Sunrise and Ocean. Midnight is the dark one.

    In the app: Settings, Theme

  • Match system theme

Turn it on and Luney follows your phone: Midnight when your phone is in dark mode, and your chosen light theme when it isn’t.

  • Pride Mode

A faint pink, purple and blue tint over the whole app.

In the app: Settings, Theme, Pride Mode

  • Soft Mode

Tones down Luney’s colours, calms animation and makes vibrations lighter. Your photos and what people post look the same.

In the app: Settings, Theme, Soft Mode

    More about Soft Mode

Accent colours and gradients have about half as much colour, and text stays as easy to read. Animated profile photos and reel previews show as still pictures, and profile effects don’t show. It’s saved on the phone where you turn it on, and nobody else can tell it’s on.

Home cards

Cards on your Home tab, some above your posts and some between them. You can hide any of them except Community Voting in Settings › Preferences, under Home feed cards.

  • Pulse

A small card with this week across all of Luney: how many groups were started, how many events are on, and how many new friendships there are.

    More about Pulse

The week starts on Sunday at midnight UTC, so the numbers start again then. It counts everyone together and never shows anything about one person.

  • Find help card

A card on Home that opens Find help near you in one tap.

  • Weekly Prompt

One question from our team each week. Answer in a line, and read everyone else’s answers under it.

    More about Weekly Prompt

Answers can be up to 280 characters, and you can read the others before you write yours.

  • Icebreakers

A new question on Home every day. Answer it, read everyone else’s answers, and react or reply to them.

    More about Icebreakers

Answers can be up to 280 characters. Each one has four reactions (laugh, heart, eyes and same) and its own replies, and you can start a DM with whoever wrote it. You’re told about replies and reactions to your answer, and you can mute a thread. The full Icebreakers screen has past questions and your own answers.

  • Roll Call

A daily check-in: pick one of twelve emoji to say you’re here, and see who else is around today.

    More about Roll Call

You get one check-in a day, and a new day starts at midnight UTC. People in Stealth Mode aren’t shown.

  • Shoutouts

A public board of thank-yous between members. Tap the heart on a shoutout to add yours.

  • Match Nudge

If you’ve made a “looking for” post in the last week, Home can suggest one other person who did too, once a day.

    More about Match Nudge

The card shows their name, photo and a bit of their post. Say hi opens a DM, and Not now hides the card for now. It never suggests friends, people you’ve blocked, or anyone in Stealth Mode.

  • Community Voting

When our team puts a suggestion up for a vote, it can show on Home with thumbs up and thumbs down.

    More about Community Voting

Tap it to read the whole suggestion and its comments, or dismiss it. It’s the one card you can’t switch off in Settings › Preferences, and it only shows when there’s something to vote on.

  • Confessions

Share something without your name on it, up to 500 characters. It shows with no name or photo, and people can react with a heart or a hug.

    More about Confessions

It goes on the wall straight away, and our team removes hate, threats, harassment and anything that gives away someone’s personal details. The card shows the newest three; tap See all to read every confession, newest first. Nobody using the app can see who wrote a confession. Our team can, so they can act on abuse.

Milestones

  • Luney Rewind

A look back at your year on Luney, open for a set time each year.

    More about Luney Rewind

You get a notification when it’s ready. It’s a set of slides: the reels you watched and posted, your hashtag of the year, the friends you messaged most, your groups, the lobbies you hosted and the date of your first post that year. Share any slide as an image, and watch it again from Settings.

  • Profile badges

Badges for things you’ve done on Luney, in a row on your profile. Tap one to see what it’s for, when you got it and how many members have it.

    More about Profile badges

Badges that come in tiers show which tiers you have and what the next one takes. You get a notification when you earn one, and you can turn those off in Settings › Notifications. Secret badges stay hidden until you earn them.

  • Friendiversary cards

Each year on the day you became friends, you can send a card with a note, in one of four designs.

    More about Friendiversary cards

The designs are Classic, Formal, Playful and Pride, and the note can be up to 280 characters. Your friend gets a notification and sees the card full screen, with the number of years, your name and photo, your note and the date you became friends. They can open it again from the notification in their inbox.

Luney VIP

  • VIP membership

A monthly or yearly subscription that adds the extras below.

    More about VIP membership

Tap Luney VIP at the top of Settings to subscribe or restore a purchase. Once you’re a member, Settings › VIP Membership shows your status and lets you manage your subscription.

  • VIP from the Luney team

When the team gives you VIP, you get a push that says when it ends (or that it doesn’t).

  • Animated avatars and banners

Your GIF avatar and banner play everywhere they show, instead of stopping on the first frame.

More about Animated avatars and banners

People who have Soft Mode or Reduce motion on see the first frame.

  • Higher activity limits

Higher limits on how much you can post, message and send friend requests.

    More about Higher activity limits

The rules still apply to you. VIP raises the limits; it doesn’t clear anything on your record.

  • Larger uploads

Upload photos, music and attachments of up to 50 MB each, instead of 15 MB.

  • Unlimited GIF favourites

Save as many GIFs to Favourites as you like, instead of 10.

  • Display name styles

Style your name with a font, a colour and an effect: Solid, Gradient, Neon, Toon or Pop.

    More about Display name styles

Use one style everywhere, or a different one in each group.

  • Private friend nicknames

Give someone a nickname only you see, and they show up as, say, “Sam (Bestie)” on their profile, in your friends list and in friend requests.

  • Per-group nicknames and avatars

Use a different nickname and avatar in each group you’re in.

  • Per-group banners

Use a different banner in each group you’re in.

  • Cross-group custom emojis

Browse the custom emoji from all your groups in the emoji picker’s Custom tab in DMs, posts and comments.

  • Bigger custom-emoji limits

A group you own can have up to 80 custom emoji instead of 10.

    More about Bigger custom-emoji limits

Animated GIF emoji come from Glow on the group, not from VIP.

  • Glow group boosts

Every VIP gets 2 Glow to give to groups they’re in. A group’s Glow adds up and unlocks extras for everyone in it.

    More about Glow group boosts

Enough Glow unlocks a higher upload limit and a custom /g/ link, and the owner can spend the group’s Glow on animated emoji, more emoji slots and group tags on members’ profiles. The group’s Glow screen shows how long each person has been boosting, and boosters get a small heart by their name in chat.

  • Glow Keeper achievement

Keep your Glow on a group and you earn a badge that levels up at 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 months.

    More about Glow Keeper achievement

If you stop boosting or your VIP ends, you have 7 days to start again before the streak resets. Badges you’ve earned stay yours.

Account and sign-in

  • Sign-in options

Sign in with email, Google or Discord, or with Apple on iPhone.

    More about Sign-in options

Link more than one in Settings › Security › Connections, and any of them opens the same account.

  • A word on the way out

When you delete your account, we ask what didn’t work and whether we can email you about it. You can skip it, and we only ask once.

More about A word on the way out

What you write is deleted with your account, or sooner if you change your mind and stay. Every button on that screen carries on with the deletion.

  • Your devices

See every device signed in to your account, and sign out any that isn’t yours.

In the app: Settings, Security, Active Sessions

  • About screen

Your app version, What’s New and our Child Safety Standards.

In the app: Settings, About Luney

  • Two-factor authentication

Turn it on and every new sign-in asks for a 6-digit code from an authenticator app as well as your password.

In the app: Settings, Security, Two-factor authentication

    More about Two-factor authentication

Scan the QR code or paste the setup key into any authenticator app.
